Myanmar Issue Discussed At ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting
JAKARTA, Sept. 4 (Bernama) -- ASEAN foreign ministers today discussed the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar, which has not been effectively implemented due to obstacles posed by the junta.
"We cannot allow this matter to continue without strong consequences for the junta, and we will present the next steps to the leaders during the upcoming summit," said Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir.
Speaking to reporters after the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, he said the new measures are based on the results of a review conducted during the meeting here.
Zambry also participated in the 27th ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting and the 34th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting (ACC Meeting).
Serbia, Panama, and Kuwait have signed instruments of accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) during the meeting.
In addition to reporting on the latest developments in the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia in October, Zambry said the ministers also discussed progress in combating cross-border crimes, including job scams.
"We emphasised increased cooperation among member states, especially Cambodia, the Philippines, and Thailand," he said.
ASEAN ministers also endorsed the ASEAN Community Post-2025 Vision towards the ASEAN 2045 Vision draft – emphasising an enhancement of the rules of the decision-making process – which will be launched in Malaysia as the chair.
