UNICEF welcomes repatriation of 79 Kyrgyzstani children from Iraq

Bishkek, March 16, 2021 / Kabar /. UNICEF welcomes the repatriation of 79 Kyrgyzstani children from Iraq this morning within the framework of “Meerim” Mission, UNICEF Representative, Christine Jaulmes, said in her statement on the repatriation of Kyrgyzstani children from Iraq. “UNICEF commends the commitment of the Government to fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and facilitate the reintegration of these children with the families at the earliest possible time, treating them primarily as victims in need of protection and considering their best interest in any decision concerning them. This includes ensuring a family environment to all children returning from Iraq and providing adequate education opportunities – so they can get back to normal child life, like any other children. UNICEF, under its mandate to uphold children’s rights and building on its long experience of assisting children affected by armed conflict, has supported the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in this humanitarian operation and will continue supporting the full reintegration of these children into their families and communities. UNICEF calls on the media to protect these children by respecting their privacy in order to avoid any discrimination or stigma,” Christine Jaulmes noted. 79 children of Kyrgyz citizens were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan from Iraq within the framework of the Meerim humanitarian mission.
