Kishida to Attend Hiroshima, Nagasaki Peace Ceremonies

Tokyo, Aug. 4 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will attend the annual peace memorial ceremonies in the atomic-bombed cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Sunday and Wednesday, a government spokesman said Friday.

The United States dropped an atomic bomb on the western city of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and another on the southwestern city of Nagasaki three days later in the closing days of World War II.

Kishida will "convey from the atomic-bombed cities that the use of nuclear weapons brought indescribable calamities," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a press conference.

Meanwhile, Kishida will hold a summit with the U.S. and South Korean leaders near Washington on Aug. 18 this year, in which extended deterrence, including the U.S. nuclear umbrella, is expected to be on the agenda.

There is no inconsistency in striving to bring the world closer to an ideal one without nuclear weapons while trying to secure an appropriate security environment, Matsuno said.
