UN Welcomes Japan's Support To Iraq In Tackling Coronavirus Pandemic

Baghdad (NINA) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed the new contribution made by the government of Japan, amounting to 1.5 million dollars, to tackle the new Coronavirus in Iraq.
A statement to the commission stated: This new funding comes at a very important time as many societies, especially the most vulnerable, were affected by the restrictions imposed by the Corona pandemic.
The statement added: This funding came at an appropriate time to support awareness campaigns on the transmission and prevention of the Coronavirus, as well as in meeting the needs of vulnerable displaced families and to ensure access to basic hygiene materials and protection equipment for medical personnel in health centers, as well as workers at border points, and UNHCR will also support during this generous contribution, the directorates of health in the governorates of Dohuk and Erbil in the field of case identification training, detection and management of suspected cases of coronavirus.
The statement quoted the Japanese ambassador, Hashimoto, as saying: Because of the invasion of the Coronavirus worldwide, the international community should make concerted efforts, and I hope that this Japanese assistance through UNHCR will contribute to preventing the spread of the Coronavirus in Iraq.
He added: In these difficult circumstances, I would like to engage in close cooperation with the new Iraqi government on wide-ranging issues.
For its part, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Agency in Iraq, Philippa Candler said: We were all affected by this global crisis, which had an impact on the vulnerable communities more acute.
She added: This generous contribution came at this appropriate time to support our efforts in responding to the emerging coronavirus and also to ensure that community health is an integral part of protection.
In response to the global humanitarian appeal for the Corona pandemic, Japan donated $ 23.9 million to provide urgent assistance to displaced communities around the world. / End
