UN Security Council Affirms Support For Iraqi Territorial Integrity

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (NINA) - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has confirmed its support for Iraqi territorial integrity. The president of the Security Council, the French envoy to the United Nations, Francois Dlater, announced that his country requested with Sweden on Thursday, an emergency session of the Council, to discuss the tension in Iraq between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan region. "France reaffirms its call for dialogue and respect for the Iraqi constitution, and fully supports the mediation of Jan Kubic, the UN representative in Iraq," said Dlater, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of October. "Kubic will provide a briefing to members of the Council on the current situation," adding that "one of the objectives of today's consultation session is to emphasize the need for a ceasefire in Iraq."/ End
