Turkish president meets British premier

LONDON (A.A) - Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday met with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London as part of is formal visit to Britain. Gul and Cameron later made a joint press statement after their meeting at Number 10 Downing Street which was also attended by Turkish Deputy Premier Ali Babacan, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish Ambassador in London Unal Cevikoz as well as Turkey's Deputy Chief of Military Staff.    "We are living the golden era of Turkish-British relations," Gul told reporters, adding that three million tourists from Britain visited Turkey each year and that around 40 thousand Britons had settled in Turkey.     Gul said Turkey and Britain shared a future vision for peace and prosperity, adding that the two countries had worked together as strategic partners since 2007. Gul said his meeting with Cameron discussed ongoing settlement talks in Cyprus, adding that Turkey and Britain supported the UN-brokered reunification negotiations.   "I made a specific emphasis that if the European Union fails to act with a strong political will, the reunification of the island might become impossible due to the Greek Cypriot side's unwillingness for solution," Gul said. "We need to encourage both sides for a settlement as the Greek Cypriot administration gets ready to assume the EU helm in such a critical moment of Europe."      The British prime minister, on his part, said Turkey was "an important friend, a crucial trade partner and a powerful NATO ally," adding that Turkey was "an effective leader" in its region due to its unique position between the East and the West.     Cameron said Tuesday's meeting with the Turkish president also took up latest development in Syria, adding, "The leadership of Turkey and the Arab League shows the way to stop the bankrupt oppressive regime in Syria."   Cameron said Britain supported Turkey's accession to the European Union, adding that the country made significant progress for membership over the past ten years. The British premier said his country also extended strong support to Turkey's fight against terrorism, adding that Britain condemned attacks of the terrorist PKK organization.
