TURKISH NATIONAL AIR CARRIER TO FLY TO ALEXANDRIA

ALEXANDRIA (A.A) - 21.06.2010 - Turkey's national air carrier will launch direct flights to Alexandria, the company said on Monday.
THY Director General Temel Kotil, speaking at a ceremony held in Borg Al-Arab Airport of Alexandria, said start of direct flights from Turkey to Alexandria contributed to the consolidation of regional cooperation.
Thus THY has increased its direct flight destinations abroad to 16.
Kotil said relations between Turkey and Egypt developed more rapidly in the recent years, noting "free trade" agreement that took effect in 2002 was important in this respect.
THY will fly between Istanbul and Alexandria four times a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Based in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines is one of the fastest growing and prosperous airlines in the world. It carries approximately 25 million passengers a year, with direct flights to 124 international and 37 domestic destinations.     
The airline was founded in 1933 with a fleet of five airplanes that carried a total of 28 passengers. The airline made its first domestic flight in 1933 and the first international flight in 1947.
THY posted 387 million Euro of profit in 2009, becoming the top five airline companies following Air China and Ryan Air in the world that recorded the highest profit in 2009.
THY's passengers were up 26 percent when compared with the same period of 2009 and reached 6.2 million.     
The airliner carried 4.9 million passengers in the first quarter of 2009. The number of business class and transit passengers in international lines was up 32 and 37 percent respectively in the mentioned period.
