Thai zoo successfully breeds African Spurred Turtoise

BANGKOK, June 23 (TNA) - Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo, for the first time, successfully bred 18 Geochelone Sulcata or African Spurred Turtoises, the third largest species of tortoise in the world. The newly-bred Sulcata tortoises are now one month old and being nursed in enclosures. There are 26 more eggs in incubators at the Dusit Zoo. Native to the Sahara Desert, the Sulcata Turtoise can each grow to 36 inch long and can weigh up to 100 kg. The lifespan of the African Spurred Tortoise is about 30–50 years, or even much longer. The Dusit Zoo, Thailand's oldest zoo, plans to continue breeding the African Spurred Tortoise in its preservation project and to share with other zoos in the country. (TNA)
