Statement by the Mediation

Doha, April 06 (QNA) - HE Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for the Council of Ministers Affairs, and HE Mohamed Ibn Chambas, AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur, issued the following statement:- Under the auspices of HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al-Thani, and in the presence of HE Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for the Council of Ministers Affairs, HE Mohamed Ibn Chambas, AU-UN Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Joint Chief Mediator and HE Aichatou S. Mindaoudou, Deputy Joint Special Representative, the Government of the Republic of Sudan and the Justice and Equality Movement Sudan signed in an official ceremony today, Saturday 6th April 2013, in Doha, a Peace Agreement on the Basis of Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. This signature constitutes the outcome of intensive negotiations between the Parties in Doha, within the framework of the efforts brokered by the State of Qatar and the AU-UN Joint Mediation. The two Parties had earlier signed a Ceasefire Agreement on 10 February 2013, and a Protocol on the Participation of the Justice and Equality Movement Sudan at the Different Levels of Government and on the Integration of its Forces, on March 29th 2013. It is expected that the implementation of these agreements will immediately commence. In this regards, the Mediation urges the parties to embark into the implementation phase with the same constructive sprit, cooperation and will which prevailed during the negotiations, with a view to putting an end to the conflict and restoring security and stability in Darfur, and directing efforts towards reconstruction and development to meet the aspirations of the people of Darfur. On this occasion, the Mediation calls upon the hold-out movements to join the Peace Process on the basis of the DDPD, in order to reach a just, comprehensive and durable settlement of the conflict in Darfur.
