Second Batch Graduates From NU-Q

Doha, May 05 (QNA) - The Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) celebrated this evening the graduation ceremony of the second batch of 33 students in a ceremony held at the Qatar National Convention this evening. HE Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) attended the ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by Morton Schapiro, President of Northwestern University, Provost Daniel Linzer and NU-Q's dean Dr. Everette E. Dennis. On his graduation speech, HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, General Manager Al Jazeera Network, said:" After four years of study, hours of lectures, days and nights of reading, thousands of words written .. your hard work only begins now! The world is facing many challenges. War. Poverty. Climate change. " He said the media has the power to be an agent of change, but many channels have lost track. Some have become biased and some have become commercialized. He expressed hope that the new graduates will have bravery to assume a huge responsibility whether they will be in broadcast, print, digital or film. From her side, Sophia Al Maria, Author of The Girl Who Fell to Earth said:" Qatar is a place of magical thinking. And this is that rarest of rare moments in time where big yellow - words like DREAM and INNOVATE and ACHIEVE have tangible, practical outcomes in a real world of our design. "They are words repeated so often that it is easy to forget their power," she said. On his part, Ismaeel Naar Student Speaker said: " Whether it is a Communications film that encapsulates the Syrian revolution and what it means for a son and his mother or a journalism report on the struggles of the Qatari people living with diabetes and illness, what we have learned here is that stories have the power to move not only a person, but a nation. " The graduating class of 33 students has accomplished an incredible amount in their 4 years at NU-Q. The seniors have produced, filmed, animated, edited, directed, researched, written, reported, and broadcast no less than 500 works during their time at NU-Q. (QNA)
