Baghdad / NINA / - The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, affirmed that Iraq is heading towards entering a new environmental era through regional and international partnerships, noting that "the difficult conditions that have afflicted Iraq during the past 40 years have made the country one of the most vulnerable to climate change." Salih said, in a video message to the United Nations Climate Summit COP26 held in the Scottish city of Glasgow, "Desertification affects 39% of the country's area, and 54% of the fertile land is at risk of losing agriculturally due to salinity resulting from the decline in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates, affecting seven million Iraqis. He added, "The government has adopted the "Revival of Mesopotamia" project as a framework for developing an environmental strategy, a project for Iraq and the region, and it relies on strategic programs that include modernizing the management of the Tigris and Euphrates waters, generating clean energy and encouraging investment through green climate funds," stressing that "Iraq's geographical location is in the heart of the region, and its ecological diversity of palms, plains, marshes and mountains, it can be a starting point for environmentally gathering the countries of the Middle East.”/ End
