Reform and Rehabilitation Centre incidents investigated

Manama, March 12 (BNA)-- Investigations are underway into the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre incidents, the Southern Governorate Chief Prosecutor Muhana Al-Shaiji said. Around 90 officers and policemen from the Centre staff and from the public order personnel, including those who sustained slight to medium injuries, gave their testimonies, he said. The inmates who were injured received the needed medical treatment and were discharged from hospital on the same day. All their injuries were slight, he added. The Public Prosecution ordered the injured policemen and inmates to be examined by a forensic doctor to determine the causes and dates of the injuries and what caused them. The Public Prosecution, during its examination of the Centre following the riots, wanted to be assured about the safety and rights of the inmates, including living conditions and visits. However, the examination revealed that several facilities and equipment inside the wards had been damaged, particularly the visit hall, and cannot be currently used. The prison's directorate suspended visits to the inmates until the damaged facilities and equipment are fully repaired. Work is expected to be completed within a week.
