Qatar Keen on Enhancing Women Status in Political Sphere

New York, April 17 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has underlined its clear stance towards enhancing the status of women in the political sphere through a number of initiatives that have been taken to enable women to play their role fully in the various parliamentary and political domains, where women are taking important positions, including ministerial positions, said Yousuf Sultan, Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations He added that HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser pays great attention to women affairs in various fields and levels, through promoting educational programs, research, development and employment opportunities. Addressing the open debate of the Security Council on the item entitled "Women, Peace and Security" here tonight Sultan said that the State of Qatar recognizes the continuing large obstacles , including the latest report of the Secretary-General (contained in document S/2012/732) to the participation and representation of women in decision-making process regarding the peace and transition processes, which it also stressed the need the national , regional and international leaders should have clear commitment to the promotion and advocacy of international norms and standards on the participation of women and the human rights of women and girls as well as all efforts aimed preventing conflicts and adopting peace-building means. He pointed out that the State of Qatar also had adopted a pre-emptive policy and preventive measures for the protection of human rights in general, and women's rights in particular, represented in the drafting of the Qatar National Vision 2030, which one of its pillars highlights women's active role in the community in all aspects of life, especially the participation in the economic and political decisions making.(QNA)
