Qatar Calls for an Independent Judicial Arab System

Cairo, February 29 (QNA) -The State of Qatar has called for promoting joint Arab legal and judicial action to meet the aspirations of the Arab peoples and strengthen the Arab and Islamic values in the judicial system. Addressing a meeting of the Arab attorneys in Cairo, Qatar's attorney general Dr Ali Bin Futais Al Merri noted that the recent changes in some Arab countries were rooted in the prejudice of the judicial and legal systems that led to the deprivation of rights and usurpation of peoples' wealths.Hence judicial systems in the Arab world should be strengthened so that they derive their strength from establishing the state of law, he said. He proposed giving the Arab League secretary general the power to set up a commission that prepares an Arab plan for the independence of the judicial system to be presented to the ministerial council of the Arab League and later to the Arab summit conference for approval. He called for the independence of the general prosecution and for lending political support for the idea in Arab countries. He recalled that the Arab justice ministers had previously turned down the idea. However, he urged the ministerial council of the Arab League to set up an independent secretariat for the general attorneys that will help the attorneys present their recommendations independent from any political interference. He also urged for removing the hurdles facing the League in this sector. (QNA)
