President Jeenbekov on reasons for decision to step down

Bishkek, Oct. 16, 2020. /Kabar/. In his last speech as president, Sooronbay Jeenbekov told about the reasons for his decision to step down and asked his compatriots for forgiveness. "Since Oct. 6 a new countdown has begun for our country. It is a fact. What will give us this turning point? History and time will give us their estimation. These days were the hardest period for every Kyrgyz citizen. Support was expressed towards me, at the same time, I, as the head of the state, was demanded to settle the situation as soon as possible, strong criticism was expressed. I made every effort to return the country to the legal field. I was holding consultations with both well-known figures of the country and partners. Hundreds of my compatriots expressed their concerns and gave advice. I made sure once again that there is no greater value for all of us than the interests of our country," he said. According to Jeenbekov, these days the efforts of civil society and the media were aimed at proving that Kyrgyzstan is a legal country. He is grateful to everyone for this civic position. "In these days, I made every effort to listen to people who said that "in such a difficult time for the country the head of state has no right to resign, it is irresponsible”. But for me, the integrity of our country, the unity of the people, the consent in our society is above all. And I decided to resign from the post of the President in order to preserve peace in our country and prevent a split in society," the Kyrgyz leader said. Sooronbay Jeenbekov stated that he intends to continue using his experience gained over the years and during his work in different positions, including as President, for the benefit of the people. Every President has big dreams and cherished goals. One of his ambitious goals was the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railroad project. "This project was negotiated at the highest level and a political decision has already been made. The experts have already started their work, the matter has already been moved on. You know that this project, as air and water, is important for Kyrgyzstan's future. Leaving the office of the President, I draw attention of my compatriots who came to power to the necessity to continue this work. I wish this project could be implemented. "Of course, there were shortcomings and flaws in my work. I apologize for them to my compatriots," he said summing up his speech. President Sooronbay Jeenbekov stepped down on Friday amid ongoing protests.
