NIHR participates in Human Rights Forum

Manama, Aug. 26 (BNA): A delegation from the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)'s Board of Commissioners, led by Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery arrived in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator to take part in the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions held in the period August 26-28 .
On the first day of the event, the delegation met representatives of a number of participating countries and discussed human rights issues in Bahrain and their respective countries.
They also discussed the reforms the Government of Bahrain had taken in the field of human rights, beginning with the ratification of international human rights conventions and the setting up of the National Institution for Human Rights, the Office of Prisoners and Detainees Rights and the General Secretariat of Grievances as well as the Special Investigations Unit.
In a statement, Dr. Jawahery stressed on the importance Bahrain’s national human rights institution taking part in all international forums. He said this is necessary because these meetings discuss the most relevant human rights issues. He said the organisation had fulfilled all requirements for it to take a quantum leap in human rights work in Bahrain.
The Forum is a leading regional organization in the field of human rights in the Asia-Pacific region, with a membership of 150 national institutions and representatives of governments and civil society organizations, along with United Nations agencies from all over Asia and the Pacific. It is also a coalition of national human rights institutions and works to share expertise to help make its vision - to be treated fairly and with respect, to live free from violence and discrimination and to have opportunities and make choices in life - a reality.
