NIHR marks International Human Rights Day

Manama, Dec. 10 (BNA): The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) joined the world in celebration of the International Human Rights Day which is observed on December 10 every year. The celebration marks the 70th anniversary of the UN General Assembly's endorsement of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which aims to foster equality, justice and dignity regardless of ethnicity, colour, religion, race or any other. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from public institutions, non-government organisations, legal personalities, advocates of human rights, Chairman and members of NIHR Board of Commissioners and NIHR Secretary General. At the celebration held by NIHR in its headquarters at Seef District, NIHR President Maria Khouri welcomed the audience, stressing that the celebration emphasises Bahrain's unwavering approach in protecting human rights through national mechanisms put in place for this purpose. She pointed out tolerance and coexistence which have ever characterised the Bahraini community, describing Bahrain as the land of civilisation, peace and coexistence . She underscored Bahrain's support to any local, regional and international efforts aimed at promoting permanent and just peace all over the world. She praised the kingdom's advanced level in the field of human rights thanks to the care and support of the government. NIHR Secretary General Dr. Khalifa bin Ali Al Fadhel affirmed that protecting human rights is a responsibility that has to be shouldered by all. He added boosting human rights in Bahrain has been underlined by the kingdom's constitution and national legislation. He pointed out the government's unrelenting efforts to protect human rights and dignity. The NIHR Secretary General inaugurated the institution's strategy 2019-2021 which aims to promote human rights according to modern legal principles and best practices.
