NIHR delegation holds meetings in Northern Ireland

London, Oct. 30 (BNA): A National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)'s delegation, which is participating in a training session on human rights in the United Kingdom, met the Justice Minister in Northern Ireland David Ford. David Ford highlighted his ministry's role in running prisons and duties regarding ensuring international standards related to human rights in treating prisoners and detainees. The delegation also met the Attorney General for Northern Ireland John Larkin. The meeting focused on the role played by the Public Prosecution in preserving public rights, fighting criminality and protecting human rights. the NIHR's delegation also held a meeting with the Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland Tom McGonigle, who explained the role of ombudsman in investigating into complaints of prisoners and ensuring that work mechanisms and the procedures in force are in accordance with the International human rights instruments.
