Migration between aimag and capital city decreased by 49 percent

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ According to the recently introduced population and housing census of 2020, 3,296,866 people and 897,427 households have been counted in Mongolia.
By the residential area of the population, 46 percent of the citizens is residing in Ulaanbaatar city, 19 percent in khangai region, 16 percent in central region, 13 percent in western region and 7 percent in eastern region. Internal migration to settled areas which commenced from the beginning of 1990s have been continuing for over last 20 years.
Mongolia’s population density was 1.5 persons per km2 in 2000, 1.7 per km2 in 2010 while it reached to 2.1 in per km2 in 2020. This increase was mainly affected by the population growth estimated by the National Statistical Office.
The 33.4 percent rise in population density in Ulaanbaatar city, 28 percent in Orkhon aimag and 17.8 percent in Darkhan-Uul aimag between 2010-2020 is related with internal migration.
Migration between aimag and the capital city has decreased by 49 percent and between the regions also by 49 percent in the last five years.
Population growth in the capital city and unplanned settlements caused by migration are negatively affecting to urban planning and development and environmental and ecological safety.
By the ordinance of the Governor of the Capital City issued on January 9, 2017, a decision was made in regard with it to suspend citizens’ migration who will permanently live in the capital city from rural areas until January 1, 2020 and it affected to the decrease of migration at specific volume.
