Kubiš Urges All Conflict Parties To Protect The Residents Of Fallujah And Its Infrastructure

BAGHDAD / NINA / Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jan Kubiš strongly urged all parties to do everything possible to protect the lives of civilians and to maintain the infrastructure of the city of Fallujah during ongoing operations to liberate it, in accordance with the international principles of human rights and humanitarian law international ". He called, according to a statement of the UN mission in Iraq, all conflict parties to adhere strictly to the international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction and proportionality and to exercise caution when doing combat actions and ensure allowing civilians to leave the areas where fighting may be going on in safety and dignity ". Kubiš expressed his appreciation for the recent directives issued by the commander of the armed forces, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the Ministry of Defense, and the body the popular mobilization commission, particularly the statement of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, as well as the statement of the Fikh Council of Iraqi Scholars of Iraqi scholars that determines the standards of conduct of military operations, and emphasizes the need to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of the civilian population from the effects of armed conflict and violence.
