KATARA to Host National Sports Day Events

Doha, February 2 (QNA) - One of Qatar's most famous landmarks, the iconic Katara Cultural Village, will host a vast range of activities on the National Sport Day (NSD) that will be observed here February 12. As part of the celebrations for the NSD, the cultural village will host a wide variety of sports activities and entertainment for all. It is planned in a way to encourage everyone to practice sport with the objective of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, event organisers said Saturday. Several sports federations will hold programmes on the day: interested individuals will be able to take to the water, courtesy of the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation which will host canoeing practices between 8am and 4pm; or for a drier option, they will be able to choose sports like athletics, for which the Qatar Federation organises fun runs between 10 and noon, and the free cycling offered by the Qatar Cycling Federation from 11am to 4pm. Those more inclined towards team sports will enjoy 3x3 competition and demonstrations organized by the Qatar Basketball Federation throughout the whole day and the handball action at the mini-court and fun goal set up by the national handball federation, available between 9am and 5pm. The Qatar Table Tennis Federation will host free practice sessions between 9am and 5pm in addition to matches throughout the day, while the Golf Association will have mini-golf activities for everyone from early morning to late afternoon. For those looking for a more physical challenge, the weightlifting and bodybuilding federation will host a show after 1pm in the afternoon, alongside competitions organised by the Qatar Wrestling Federation. The Boxing Federation will feature various activities throughout the whole day, while for those wanting to exercise brain rather than brawn, the Chess Federation's demonstration games, hosted between 9am and 5pm, will be of interest. Activities at Katara will not be limited to national federations, however: private institutions are also complementing the rich programme of events making the popular location one of the best venues to enjoy the National Sport Day. Katara will open its beach soccer grounds to the public between 9am and 5pm, whereas aerobics classes will take place between 10am and 4pm. The Childhood Centre will take care of the youngest visitors and their parents with family activities throughout the whole day, while the Hamad Medical Centre will tap into a time-honoured tradition of village fete games such as egg-and-spoon and sack races from early in the morning. There will be also activities from the Primary Health Corporation and Ihssan, to make the NSD at Katara an unforgettable experience for everyone, organisers said. (QNA)
