Iraq, UN Discuss Holding A National Conference In Basra To Curb Underage Marriage And Societal Violence Against Iraqi Women

Baghdad / NINA / - Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Hamid Al-Ghazi, discussed with the representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Iraq Rita Columbia, preparations for holding a comprehensive national conference in Basra Governorate to reduce the phenomenon of underage marriage and societal violence against Iraqi women. During his meeting with Rita Columbia, Al-Ghazi confirmed that the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, through the Department of Empowering Iraqi Women, organized many local and international workshops and conferences concerned with Iraqi women and their economic, social and political empowerment, as well as community activities, in coordination with the relevant official institutions and civil society organizations concerned with the issue of women. The two sides discussed the mechanism of preparing for holding a comprehensive national conference in Basra governorate for two days, to reduce the phenomenon of underage marriage and societal violence against Iraqi women, protecting women in the governorates, and preparing a plan for coordination between the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Iraqi Women Empowerment Department in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers. / End
