Hungarian minister says EU should stress Turkey's being a model for Islam world more often

-BRUSSELS (A.A) - Hungary's state minister for European Union (EU) affairs said on Thursday that the EU should stress more often that Turkey should be taken as a model by the Islam world.
Eniko Gyori said the EU should keep the enlargement process alive when there was a serious crisis in a near geography.
The EU should more often say that Turkey was a model for the Islam world, Gyori told AA correspondent.
Hungary is currently holding the rotating presidency of the union.
Gyori said she hoped other EU member states would agree with Hungary's view not to be narrow-minded and to look at the near geography with a wider vision.
The minister said their hands were tied up in Turkey's EU accession process, particularly due to Cyprus problem.
Gyori said Hungary wanted to open negotiations with Turkey on competition during its presidency, however it was expecting "a maximum cooperation from Turkey."
Finding Turkey's visa expectations as right, Gyori said the union could not reach a consensus on launching negotiations on visa exemption.
Gyori said in case Turkey met required criteria to open negotiations on competition and signed readmission agreement, Hungary would have a strong argument in its hand to convince "unwilling members" about visa exemption.
Turkey became an EU candidate country in December 1999. The union launched accession talks with Turkey on October 3, 2005. The EU has so far opened 13 of the 35 chapter headings to negotiations with Turkey.
