Human Rights Council Endorses Qatar-Submitted Draft Resolution

Geneva, June 13 (QNA) -The United Nations Human Rights Council endorsed by consensus draft resolution A/HRC/23/L.5 titled "Role of the freedom of opinion and expression in the empowerment of women", submitted by the State of Qatar with a group of key sponsors under the human rights agenda-third item of the 23rd session of the UN Human Rights Council related to the enhancing and protection of the civil, political, economic, social and cultural human rights, and the right of the development. The group comprises Brazil, Canada, Montenegro, Romania, Sierra Leone, United Kingdom, and United States. This is the first time that the State of Qatar submitted a draft resolution on women, in cooperation with a number of countries as part of the empowered women initiative, established by women ambassadors’ foundation at the United Nations Office at Geneva. By adopting this resolution, the UN Human Rights Council expressed deep concern over the discrimination, intimidation, harassment and violence that often prevent women and girls from enjoying their full human rights and fundamental freedoms, which ultimately hinders their full participation in all fields.
