HCFC Phase-out Management Plan launched

Manama, Sept. 16 (BNA): The Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) today launched the national strategy to gradually reduce Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) which cause the depletion of the ozone layer. The HCFC Phase-out Management Plan was inaugurated under the auspices of His Majesty’s Personal Representative, (SCE) President His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa. The national blueprint marks the United Nations (UN) International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, a multilateral environmental agreement which was agreed upon at the Vienna Conference of 1985 and entered into force in 1988. Addressing the opening ceremony, SCE Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina conveyed greetings from HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa to the participants in the launch event. He stressed the crucial importance of the HCFC Phase-out Management Plan which comes within Bahrain’s commitment to Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Dr. bin Daina honoured the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the General Directorate for Clearance and Customs Inspection, the United Nations (UN) Programme for the Environment (UNEP – West Asia Regional Office, Bahrain Society of Engineers and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A workshop is also being held on the sidelines of the launch ceremony, bringing together senior officials representing ministries and national companies and institutions, which played a key role in in drawing up the draft strategy for the coming five years.
