GCC Society for History and Archeology's 14th Forum Opens

Doha, April 17 (QNA) - Under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the GCC Society for History and Archeology's 14th forum opened here today, with the participation of more than 200 historians, researchers and experts from the Arab Gulf States and the Arab world. During the inaugural session, HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museum Authority (QMA) was honored with the prestigious award of the GCC Society for History and Archeology in recognition of leading role in preserving and conserving of heritage. HE Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani received the award on HE behalf. In his opening address, HE the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari stated that this forum reflects the deep- rooted cultural exchanges between the peoples of the region, which emphasizes the GCC nations' common history and joint destiny. The State of Qatar attaches great importance to the protection of cultural heritage as a national responsibility, which should be maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations, Dr. Al Kuwari explained. Preserving Qatar's heritage is an important pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Cultural Sector Strategy 2011 - 2016, which demonstrates the growing capacity of the cultural heritage to be a stabilizing factor and play a role in enhancing human bonds, the Minister said. Dr. Al Kuwari hailed the efforts being exerted by the GCC Society for History and Archeology and its major achievements since it was established in 1997 and until now. The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage plays a key supporting role in enhancing culture in Qatar through such meetings, he said, congratulating HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on receiving the GCC Society for History and Archeology well deserved Award for HE persistent efforts to preserve Qatari heritage and national identity, which has enhanced Qatar's position as an international and regional destination with unique cultural attractions. Concluding, Dr. Al Kuwari expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for their enormous efforts and support designed to support our cultural identity and national heritage.
