Foreign Minister: Washington Is A Strong Ally Of Iraq And We Are Working To Protect This Alliance

Baghdad (NINA) - Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said today, Wednesday, that Washington is a strong ally of Iraq and we are working to protect this alliance. Hussein added in a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington: With regard to signing a Memorandum of Understanding or an agreement with Chevron, I think it will be signed today, yes. He stressed: We want good relations with our neighbors, provided that no one interferes in the affairs of Iraq. He indicated “we want to protect our alliances and relations with others, including the United States of America. Hussein clarified that: The Trump administration's quest to impose sanctions on Iran is an American policy, and Iraq seeks to maintain a strong alliance with Washington while maintaining positive relations with neighboring Iran. For his part, Pompeo said that announcements about energy deals between US companies and Iraq will come soon. He added that there are no announcements regarding the withdrawal of US forces and the focus should be on areas of cooperation. "The real focus is on the joint efforts that we are making, whether it is economic efforts, humanitarian aid efforts, or security assistance," Pompeo stressed. He continued: We still understand that the Iraqi people need that, and the sovereignty of the Iraqi people depends on the continued commitment of the United States to support them and provide them with that assistance, and we are determined to do so. / End
