Floods in Thailand Kill 35 People

BANGKOK, Sept 21 (TNA) - At least 35 people drowned and one person injured after floods have submerged homes, bridges and uprooted trees throughout Thailand, a senior officer of Interior Ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said Saturday. Director-general of the Department, said rapid floods caused by tropical storm Kajiki and tropical depression Podul plus southwestern storm hovering over the Andaman Sea in the South and the Gulf of Thailand had brought heavy rain from August 29 till now. A total of 32 provinces have been hard hit by torrential rains while about 5,000 houses throughout the country were damaged and more than 400,000 households were affected. Most perished in the floods were reported in the northeastern part of the country while severe floods were still continuing in four northeastern provinces including Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon, Roi Et and Si Sa Ket. Relief officials along with army personnel have mobilised necessary equipment, installed water pumps, and distributed food and water to the flood victims in temporary tents m and flooded areas, he said. The relief officials have also provided health services and rehabilitate flood victims. Houses repairs would be performed after floods have receded, he added. (TNA)
