Floods Hit Surin Rice Farmers

SURIN, Nov 10 (TNA) -- Rice farmers in the northeastern province had to harvest early as the Mun River started to overflow and a new storm is likely to bring more rain. The Meteorological Department reported that a depression would reach the coast of southern Vietnam on Nov 10-11 and bring rain to the lower Northeast and the East. That prompted rice farmers in Surin province to harvest early as the Mun River was overflowing to hundreds of rais of paddy fields that were in waist-deep floodwater. Green rice was put in boats and then transported to dry ground. Inundated paddy fields included those in Tha Lat village of Sri Narong sub-district in Chumphon Buri district. Prasart Japulee, a 46-year-old rice farmer in the village, said early harvest was better than letting all his rice die in flooding. Farmers were helping one another in the early harvest of their paddy fields free of charge while flood levels were rising fast, he said. (TNA)
