Flooding Situation In Bangkok Improves Slightly

BANGKOK, November 20 (TNA) - Flooding situation in several parts of Bangkok has improved slightly early Sunday while concerned officials are closely monitoring whether the closing of sluice gate would have any impact on Bang Chan Industrial Estate on the eastern side of the capital. Water level at Khlong Song sluice gate receded by three centimeters with no opening of other sluice gates in the area as demanded by people living in Bangkok’s neighbouring province of Pathum Thani. Officials are watching whether the closure of sluice gates would have any impact to Sai Mai area, particularly to Bang Chan Industrial Estate. On the western side of the capital, the water level of Maha Sawas canal receded four centimeters which has also helped lowered floodwaters along Rama II Road, considered the major road for travelers wishing to travel down South, and several nearby roads. However, floodwaters remained high and emitted foul smell in several alleys in the area. Accompanied by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) workers, police, soldiers and people from all walks of life, Bangkok governor Mom Rajawong (M.R.) Sukhumbhand Paribatra continued the ‘Big Cleaning Day’ for the second day Sunday. The cleaning of roads was held around Bangkok Noi district on the Thon Buri side. M.R. Sukhumbhand has pledged to clean streets in the capital before December 31 as New Year’s gift for Bangkokians. BMA workers have been able to collect about 1,700 tonnes of garbage since the programme started yesterday, he added. (TNA)
