Female Baby Elephant Born At Way Kambas
EAST LAMPUNG, March 21 (Antara) - An 85-kilogram female baby elephant was born in the jungle of Way Kambas National Park (WKNP), Subakir, the park's head, confirmed here, Monday.
"It is good news that we have a new, healthy female baby elephant that was born at the park's Elephant Response Unit," he revealed.
Since its establishment in 1985, the WKNP has been utilized as a conservation organization for Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus), which are currently diminishing in number.
With an area of 125.6 thousand hectares, the WKNP took the first initiative to develop an "elephant school" aimed at becoming a conservation centre for taming, training, and breeding elephants.
No less than 300 domesticated elephants have been trained well and been deployed in various regions in Indonesia. The park also has the country's first elephant hospital.
Not only elephants but the WKNP is also a conservation centre for Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) under the management of the International Rhino Foundation to prevent the species from extinction.
