Erekat: Upcoming Doha Summit Will Strengthen the Palestinian Reconciliation
Doha, March 20 (QNA) - Dr. Saeb Erekat, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), underlined the importance of the upcoming Arab Summit being held in Doha under the chairmanship of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, which would contribute to strengthening the Palestinian reconciliation and support the Palestinian people.
In statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr. Erekat hailed Qatar's positive role in support of the Palestinian people and other Arab issues.
He noted that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas attaches great importance to Doha Summit as its comes after the UN resolution which accorded Palestine as non-member observer state under occupation; and also after the formation of the new Israeli government which intends to continue its aggressive policies against the Palestinian people.
Dr. Erekat expressed hope that the upcoming summit would result in the implementation of the Arab "safety net" which was approved by senior officials at a ministerial meeting held in Doha earlier to help the Palestinian people in the face of the arbitrary economic measures and sanctions imposed by the Israeli occupation.
He also stressed the importance of forming a delegation headed by Qatar, which will chair the summit, and the membership of the Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Nabil Elaraby, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Egypt and Jordan, aiming to address the Palestinian cause before the permanent members of the Security Council.
Dr. Erekat highlighted that the Doha agreement between Fatah and Hamas, which was reached under the auspices of HH the Emir of Qatar, represents currently the "engine" to implement the national reconciliation accord. (QNA)
