Donors Pledges to Darfur Total $3.696 Billion

Doha, April 08 (QNA) -Pledges of donor countries at the International Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Darfur totaled $3.696 dlrs, including pledges of the Sudanese government, according to the Doha Peace Document on Darfur, HE Qatar's Deputy Premier and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Ahmed Bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud said. Representatives of countries, organizations and funds expressed their political and financial support for the political strategy in Darfur. They reviewed their previous pledged and stressed the relationship between peace and development. They lauded the role played by Qatar, led by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani in maintaining peace in Darfur and signing the Doha Peace Document on Darfur as well as the final agreement between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement. By virtue of Qatari efforts , the situation in Darfur has improved, they acknowledged, praising also the role of the UN and African Union mission in protecting civilians and refugees. The representatives, speaking at meetings devoted to political and financial pledges in Darfur, urged the armed groups that haven't yet joined the Doha Peace Document on Darfur to do so as soon as possible, emphasizing that development in Darfur , in particular, and in Sudan, in general needed stability and prudent governance as well as comprehensive participation in government as a means conducive to cherished peace and stability.
