Darfur Peace Agreement Monitoring Committee Denounces JEM Leader Assassination
Doha, June 04 (QNA) - HE the Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud said Tuesday that all participants in the extraordinary meeting of the committee monitoring the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement had strongly denounced the attack by the JEM Gibriel lbraham Group in which the head of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Mohammed Beshir and a number of JEM leaders were killed .. They also demanded the release of abductees as soon as possible, HE Al Mahmoud added.
In a press statement after the meeting, HE Al Mahmoud noted that the meeting discussed the consequences of the assassination of JEM head Mohammed Beshir .
He added that the participants stressed their determination to continue the peace process and called on all armed movements that did not join the peace negotiations based on the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur to do so without preconditions.
HE Al Mahmoud said the meeting was also briefed by JEM's representative who survived the assassination, adding that the JEM had decided to appoint the commander Bakhit Dabjo as its chairman for a period of sixty days beginning from the date of the assassination on May 12 , and they would elect a new JEM leader. He said the JEM confirmed commitment to the agreement signed in Doha and its involvement in the path of peace.
With regard to the Donor Conference held in Doha recently, HE Al Mahmoud noted that there is a strategy approved by the conference, including the start of urgent strategic projects, stressing Qatar's commitment to the amounts including $500million as announced and $88.6 million allocated to support the implementation of urgent projects stated in the strategy."
HE Mr. Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, "We in Qatar approved the amounts as directed by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, and we want the implementation of urgent projects in Darfur to be in accordance with what had been approved by the Doha conference, under a mechanism of control and transparency , he added.(QNA)
