Bahrain organises top profile celebration at UN headquarters

Manama, Sept. 22 (BNA): Bahrain has organised at the UN headquarters in New York a top profile reception ceremony on the occasion of granting His Royal highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Information and Communication Technology in Sustainable Development Award by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The celebration was attended by diplomats, more than 150 senior officials from the UN and its specialised organisations, media persons and journalists. Shaikh Hussam bin Isa Al Khalifa said the top honour bestowed on HRH the Premier is an assertion of his pioneering role in utilizing new technology to carry out development strategies. He added conferring the top honour on HRH the Prime Minister coincides with the 70th anniversary of the UN and the 150th anniversary of ITU. Therefore the award, he stressed, is a tribute from ITU for the Bahraini government's keenness to share with the world global trends in mapping out suitable solutions for existing issues. He also affirmed that HRH the Premier has devoted himself for the service of his nation and people. As a matter of fact, he deserved the honour in recognition of his efforts to boost Bahrain's prosperity and maintain its security and stability.
Director of ITU office at the UN in New York Gary Fowlie praised Bahrain's efforts to avail of ICT in backing the sustainable development efforts, stressing that HRH the Premier set a model for many countries seeking to provide communication networks for citizens. He also pointed out that ITU is working diligently to support diversity of ICT and its development so as to reach most of the people in the world.
