Ayutthaya to present water management plan to Thai PM

THAILAND, June 9 (TNA) - Ayutthaya Governor Wittaya Phiewpong said Satruday that he will present a flood prevention plan for his central province, called the "Ayutthaya model", to Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawathra during her visit next week. Wittaya acknowledged that the "Ayutthaya model" emphasizes on awareness build-up to encourage participation of local people in efforts to prevent and address floods. There will also be volunteers in each local community and village to help sick and elderly people in case of any inundation. According to the governor, if approved by the Thai Cabinet, the "Ayutthaya model" could serve as a flood prevention prototype for other provinces in the country. Accompanied by Cabinet members and concerned flood authorities, the Thai premier is scheduled to visit Ayutthaya on June 11, as part of her tour to inspect progress of flood prevention measures in flood-prone downstream to upstream provinces. In Ayutthaya, according to the governor, the Thai prime minister will visit the Rojana Industiral Park, which was overwhelmed by floods late last year, to look into progress of the construction of a flood prevention dyke surrounding the industrial park. The construction project for the 71-kilometer-long dyke has been reportedly 24 per cent complete. (TNA)
