(ASHGHAL) Conducts Workshop on Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)

Doha, February 01 (QNA) -The Public Works Authority (ASHGHAL) has conducted a workshop entitled'' Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)'' at Four Seasons Hotel. The ITC workshop presented a detailed descriptions of ITS, the method of controlling the road traffic movements using advanced tools and special programs that help improving operation and management of transportation networks, traffic flow and goods transportation more securely and effectively, a press release (ASHGHAL) issued here of late said. High ranking officials of the public sector including HE Eng. Nasser Al Mawlawi, President of Public Works Authority, Dr. Rashid Ahmed Al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Brigadier Mohammed Abdullah Al-Maliki, Secretary of the National Committee for Traffic Safety attended the workshop. Besides, dignitaries who attended the workshop include representatives of other governmental agencies and institutions including the Qatar Bahrain Causeway Foundation, the Qatar Foundation, the Qatar Olympic Committee, Barwa Real Estate Company, Qatar Broadband Network company, the Musheireb Properties, the Emiri Guard, the Ministry of Interior, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Qatar Navigation, Qatar General Organization for Standards, Metrology, Qatar Petroleum and Qatar General Electricity and water Corporation (KAHRAMAA). It is to be mentioned that ASHGHAL is currently seeking ways to develop a comprehensive plan and structure for implementing ITS in the state with the support of consultancy organizations such as Janet Fleming Inc. The study project has been started in October 2011 and shall complete by end of September 2012. The proposed plan will also provide a clear road map for the implementation of ITS in the entire road network of the state, as will determine the strategic needs and visions for it. The overall structure will determine the general framework to ensure the integration of technical systems during the first few months of the project. ASHGHAL and the consultancy team shall take efforts to educate stakeholders by conducting awareness workshops to provide a comprehensive overview of ITS. The team will conduct necessary study and analysis of best practices for the benefit of the state. During the current year, the team will develop a working draft of the project to include best practices worldwide, inculcate its application in the Qatari environment, in consultation and cooperation with other stakeholders. It is remarkable that the benefits of ITS have been proved worldwide. It is expected that implementation of ITS in the state of Qatar shall bring many benefits including reduced traffic accidents, reduced traffic congestion, improved traffic flow, increase road capacity and construction of sustainable road network in the state.
