Akylbek Zhaparov: Kyrgyzstan is committed to protecting mountain ecosystems

Bishkek, June 16, 2022 /Kabar/. As one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change, the Kyrgyz Republic is aware of the importance of the global problem of climate change and is making every effort to successfully address it, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country Akylbek Zhaparov said addressing the Second Regional SDG Summit Beyond COVID-Towards Just Recovery in Central Asia in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
He added that in this regard, the country has put forward a number of initiatives to promote international cooperation in the environmental sphere.
The head of the Cabinet noted the adoption of the resolution of the 75th UNGA session "Nature knows no borders: transboundary cooperation - a key factor for biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable use " as one of the few resolutions on cooperation between UN member states to protect and conserve transboundary ecosystems.
"In order to implement the chosen environmental course, by the Decree of Kyrgyz president the year 2022 was declared in our country as the Year of Mountain Ecosystems Protection and Climate Resilience. The national campaign "Green Heritage” was launched within the framework of the year to improve the climate sustainability of the country by increasing the area of forest plantations by 5-6 million trees per year," Zhaparov said, adding that Kyrgyzstan also supports the development of the UN Special Program for the conservation of mountain forests and invites international partners and organizations to participate in the campaign to promote these initiatives.
He noted that the republic intends to submit a resolution on the announcement of the Decade of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
