Academics suggest reshaping Thailand's water management

BANGKOK, December 22 (TNA) - Academics have suggested that Thailand reshape national water management to ensure sustainable flood prevention and control in the long run. Speaking at a public forum on flood preparation and response, organized in Bangkok on Wednesday by Thailand's Administrative Court and relevant agencies, Assistant Professor Dr. Nopanant Tapananont of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Architecture, acknowledged that proper urban planning and rehabilitations of forests and water sources are crucial for the country's flood prevention. Dr. Nopanant said that Bangkok and surrounding provinces also need to work together to reshape their urban planning and water management programmes concordantly, so do all other regions in the country to ensure the conformity of the newly-tailored national water management master plan. Associated Professor Dr. Seri Suparathit, a water management expert, meanwhile, suggested that all concerned agencies further upgrade their data assessments and relevant analyses to ensure their timely and proper information provided to the public for their effective preparations and response to inundations which are likely to reoccur next year, given the escalating problem of climate change with more storms.
