‘Sweden took strict COVID-19 measures without bans’
Government manages COVID-19 crisis with suggestions rather than prohibitions, says top Swedish diplomat
STOCKHOLM
Defying criticisms over Sweden’s soft precautions against the coronavirus compared to other European countries, the Swedish foreign minister said her country took strict measures without imposing bans in fighting the virus.
Speaking exclusively to Anadolu Agency, Ann Linde said the perception that life continues in its daily routine in Sweden is simply wrong.
“The Swedish government took very strict measures against COVID-19. The government took these measures by asking the public to follow them, not by imposing bans,” said Linde.
“For example, we advised everybody should stay at home on the Easter. 96% of people followed it. Therefore, the government is acting with suggestions, not prohibitions,” she added.
Linde also celebrated the Muslims holy month of Ramadan.
The coronavirus death toll in Sweden stands at 2,270, while more than 18,700 people have been infected, according to Swedish health authorities.
