EU enlargement official Fule meets main opposition leader in Turkey
ISTANBUL (A.A) Feb 11 - As part of his talks in Turkey, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule met country's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Istanbul on Friday.
Following the meeting, Kilicdaroglu told reporters that he asked Fule to help speed up Turkey's accession process and open new chapters in entry talks. Kilicdaroglu said the meeting also discussed recent developments in the world, especially in Egypt and Tunisia, amendments to the laws on the Supreme Court of Appeals and the Council of State, which he said was a concern for his party, as well as prospective changes in Turkish constitution.
"We discussed in detail the freedom of judiciary and media, as well as transparency in public expenditure. I gave some information about these issues. We will intensify our relations. A group of CHP officials will travel to Brussels in the coming days. Mr. Fule told me that he would personally welcome this technical group," Kilicdaroglu said.
For his part, Fule said that relations between Turkey and EU were strong, but had ups and downs in accession negotiations from time to time. Fule said difficulties were normal and not surprising as Turkey is a large country, which he said has positive effects on EU. He said the thing was to strengthen relations between Turkey and EU.
On reform of the judiciary in Turkey, Fule said recent constitutional amendments helped Turkey move forward to EU standards, however, he said prospective reforms should be made in an atmosphere of a comprehensive dialogue of all segments in the society.
Touching on the uprising in Tunisia and Egypt, Fule said EU thinks Turkey, as a candidate country, is a good model for Muslim countries.
