4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Java

By MOHD SHUKRI ISHAK JAKARTA, April 19 (Bernama) -- A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit Kebumen, Central Java Wednesday, leaving many residents injured and hundreds of homes destroyed. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) reported that the quake struck at 1.28 pm at a depth of four kilometres (km) with the epicentre 53 km north of Kebumen district, about 460 km from Jakarta. The quake did not trigger any tsunami. According to local media, the quake caused extensive damage to hundreds of houses and buildings. Meanwhile a Malaysian Embassy spokesman said so far, there have been no reports of Malaysians affected by the incident. “The embassy is still waiting for a detailed report especially on those injured in the quake,” said the spokesman. --BERNAMA
