-D-8 COUNTRIES DECIDE ON ESTABLISHING SEED BANK IN TURKEY
ANKARA (A.A) - 02.03.2009 - Turkish Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Mehmet Mehdi Eker said Monday the establishment of D-8 Seed Bank in Turkey would maximize the joint interests of D-8 member countries.
A statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Monday said that Mehmet Mehdi Eker attended the D-8 Agriculture Ministers Conference in Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur between February 25 and 27, 2009.
The Kuala Lumpur conference focused on facilitating food security, erecting new facilities for fertilizer production, and establishment of a seed bank.
The attendants at the conference agreed on establishing a seed bank in Turkey with the contribution of Iran.
A workshop will take place in Turkey within the next six months in preparation for the new seed bank.
D-8 is a group of developing countries that have formed an economic development alliance in 1997, consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
