Turkish premier says Turkey's exports could grow by 4 times in next 12 years
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 24.03.2011 - The Turkish prime minister said on Thursday that Turkey's exports, which had grown by 3.5 times in the last 6 years, could easily increase by 4 times in the next 12 years.
Speaking at a meeting on "Turkey's Export Strategy for 2023" in Istanbul, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his government's vision for 2023 had been criticized by some circles on the grounds that it was not realistic or achievable.
Erdogan said all the targets announced so far were realistic goals that had been assessed and calculated in a detailed way.
"We have never made promises that we cannot keep," Erdogan said, adding that such stance of his government had strengthened citizens' confidence in politics.
"With less than three months until the elections, some circles are voicing extreme and impossible promises that do not conform with Turkey's realities," the premier also said.
Erdogan noted that basic indicators concerning the year 2023 such as national income, exports, education, transportation, energy and unemployment had been made public so far.
"Our election statement is being prepared at the moment in line with the goals for 2023. It will most probably be announced right after our candidate list is made public," he said.
Erdogan also said current figures showed that Turkey's exports would return to pre-crisis levels this year and exceed 130 billion USD again.
"Our exports, which have grown by 3.5 times in the last 6 years, can easily increase by 4 times in the next 12 years. This corresponds to a figure even higher than 500 billion USD," he said.
The premier noted that their goal was to provide exports with flexibility in accordance with the needs and demands of the upcoming terms.
Erdogan said the country's production structure would be improved and in some areas re-built in line with export goals, adding that relevant institutions would execute the strategy in a coordinated way.
"We need to introduce and implement a staged plan that will help our country get a bigger share in global trade," he said.
Erdogan stated that such share should be increased to 0.91 percent by 2013, to 1.14 percent by 2018 and to 1.46 percent by the year 2023, adding that an average increase of 13 percent was needed in exports to achieve these goals.
"We are planning to compensate the unachieved increase rate in the following years. We will work more, we will find different countries and we will increase these figures," the premier noted.
