State committee: About 40 percent of cars do not meet safety standards in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 29 / Trend H. Valiyev /
The decision to terminate vehicle imports without anti-lock braking systems and airbags into Azerbaijan does not concern the Niva and UAZ VAZ-2121, National Metrology Center Director Namig Tagiyev told media today.
According to the requirements of AZS 635-2012 national standard "Certification order of wheeled vehicles, their equipment and parts", the vehicles (except for all-wheel drive vehicle) imported into Azerbaijan or manufactured within the country must have the anti-lock
ABS system and at least an airbag. The permission will not be issued on production and imports of cars without these elements from May 1.
He said the decision applies to passenger cars weighing less than 2.5 tons.
"As of early 2012, the country registered 1 million cars, of which 400,000 do not meet safety standards," he said.
