Kahramaa Celebrates First Anniversary Of Water Rationalization (Tarsheed) Campaign

Doha , April 22 (QNA) - Under the Patronage of HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Kahrama celebrated Monday the one year anniversary for launching their campaign for rationalizing (Tarsheed) water and power use. The campaign was launched last year on Earth Day, April 22. HE Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah attended the celebration. HE the Minister of Energy and Industry Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada gave a speech on the occasion in which he said that Qatar was located in a region renowned for the lack of water resources and rainfall. The region was also suffering from accelerating groundwater depletion, he said. HE the Minister said that, coupled with the fact that individuals in Qatar have one of the highest water use rates in the world, the state faces a real challenge in providing the individuals with their water needs. A person living in Qatar consumes 640 liters of water on average a day. It was for those reasons that the state looked to encourage rationalizing the use of water. The challenges also prompted the state to make energy issues one of the main pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030, HE the Minister added. Environmental development and economic development go hand in hand, HE the Minister said. As part of its plan to face these challenges, the State of Qatar is looking to rely on solar energy to produce electricity. They began in a project that will generate 200 megawatts. HE the Minister of Energy and Industry said that the State of Qatar was looking to move gradually towards more sustainable sources of energy. HE the Minister added that Kahramaa's campaign came to complement all of the effort made by the country to improve the use of its resources. Al Sada revealed that the country was working on a number of projects that will bring electric consumption down 20%. It was also working on other projects that would lower water consumption by 35%. HE Dr. Al Sada called on all members of the Qatari society to work on making the campaign to rationalize water and power use a successful one. (END)
