Iran's Guardian Council confirms subsidy bill

TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA) -- The Guardian Council has endorsed the parliamentary ratification on redirecting subsidies, the council’s spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaii announced on Wednesday.

The goal of the subsidy reform plan is to bring prices to their true market level within a five-year period. The plan mainly targets energy prices.

“This morning members of the council in a session studied the bill for redirecting subsidies… and confirmed it,” Kadkhodaii said.

The Guardian Council had earlier asked the parliament to make some amendments to the subsidy reform bill.

Constitutionally, a parliamentary approval becomes a law after a confirmation by the Guardian Council.

The council is tasked to conform parliamentary ratifications to the constitution and the Islamic rules.

“In regards to the amendments done to the bill by the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) on redirecting subsidies the Guardian Council did not find this bill contradictory to sharia and the constitution,” Kadkhodaii told the Mehr News Agency.
