By Zaglul A. Chowdhury

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 10 (BSS) -: Spouses of several world leaders joining scholars and other co-participants at an international conference here today called for greater political, economic and social equality for women towards creating a happier and healthier world.

They believe women across the world are lagging behind their male counterparts in many crucial areas, largely because of men's apathy and indifference to women as regards to their ability, and this trend needs to be reversed for further development of mankind in entirety.

The conference titled "International Forum - Expanding The Role Of Women In Cross-Cultural Dialogue" in the beautiful Caspian-sea city brought more than 150 delegates from all over the world.

However, the main attractions of the gathering are the wives of several world leaders, who at the opening of the two-day gathering emphasized the need for creating a level- playing field where women will play more effective role in the multi-facet fields inextricably linked to national and global affairs in various forms.

Host nation's first lady Ms. Mehriban Aliyeva gave a strong plea for integrating women in many critically important areas and said, there was a dire necessity to shake off the visible indifference in many spheres of society at large.

British member of the House of Lords Baroness Manzila Polauddin and participants from Muslim as well as western nations are attending the programme, one of the main objectives of which is to shatter the women-related political, social and religious barriers across the world with full respect to their cultural sensitivity.

The speakers struck discordant notes on some issues, but were unanimous that greater unity among the women folk and shedding of numerous inhibitions are necessary to bring women in the mainstream of society.

Several issues related to world peace and stability as well as those affecting the Muslim world were touched by the speakers in their speeches and remarks, while women matters were the key subject of discussions. - BSS.
