No military solution to crisis in Afghanistan, Tehran and Ankara say

TEHRAN, Jan. 1 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Turkish President Abdullah Gul have said there is no military solution to the crisis in Afghanistan.

During a telephone conversation on Thursday, the two presidents discussed the situation in Afghanistan and other regional developments.

Experience has shown that the military option will not work in Afghanistan since what Afghans really need is humanitarian assistance and support to reconstruct their country, Ahmadinejad said.

He also called for a global effort to help stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.

Gul said the Afghan people need humanitarian assistance and support to reconstruct their country, not military assistance.

Ankara and Tehran have the same approach toward Afghanistan, he added.

However, it would be useful to raise the level of cooperation between Iran and Turkey and to hold regular bilateral talks on regional issues, the Turkish president suggested.
