System cannot tolerate desecration of Islam: Iran's cleric

TEHRAN, Jan. 1 (MNA) – Tehran Friday prayer leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said that the nation does not want to breach the law or overlook the Supreme Leader’s directives for a calm environment in the country, but the Islamic system cannot tolerate those who are showing disrespect to Islam.

Pointing to the most recent unrest in Tehran, he said the incidents proved that some people have targeted the Islamic system and their main aim was not a protest to the presidential election results.

“They wanted to root out the system and wanted to revenge on the nation,” he told worshippers.

The protesters had imagined that the establishment has become weak and people don’t support it any longer but they were disillusioned, he explained.

On Sunday when people were marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), a highly revered religious figure for Shia Muslims, a group of protestors clashed with police, chanted slogans against top government officials, and damaged public property.

In reaction to the Sunday riots, hundreds of thousands of people poured into the streets in Tehran on Wednesday to condemn those acts. Similar rallies were held in other cities.

Jannati said although the time was tight to invite people to the demonstrations on Wednesday, about three million people loyal to the Islamic Republic took to the streets across the country to condemn disrespect to Ashura rituals.

Jannati also appreciated the national TV for broadcasting the scenes of the Sunday riots.

“I appreciate the performance of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting which aired comprehensive reports from the demonstrations.”

He also praised some clerics and parliamentarians for their calls to severely punish those who showed disrespect to Islamic values on the Ashura day, saying they rightfully have appealed for maximum punishment against the protesters.

Pointing to foreigners’ support for protestors, the top cleric said, “When the U.S., the Britain, and the Zionist regime officially support the protesters, certainly these countries have paid protesters to combat the Islamic Republic.”

Addressing opposition leaders, he said, “Our people are so nice and law abiding, otherwise they would have not let you alive.”

Jannati, the Guardian Council secretary, also said some recognized figures who are silent about the recent incidents are committing a big sin.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the prayer leader said the nation expects that the Judiciary deals firmly with protesters, but the Judiciary is faced with legal constraints as it should consider the expediency of the establishment.

Reconciliation with these protesters is meaningless and they should be punished, he opined.
